outside help is coming for the oakland police department. the controversial hiring approved during a lengthy city council meeting overnight. a strange story you will only see on 2. why a bay area

artist is feeling the heat from a red-hot project. it's happening right now on capitol hill. secretary of state hillary clinton is testifying about the nightmare last september. it's a big day for apple as its ceo is set to announce its earnings reports for the quarter. we'll tell you why the reports are crucial. "mornings on 2" starts right now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm brian flores. >> i'm claudine wong. it is wednesday, january 23rd. tori and dave have today off. well, overnight, the oakland council approved a controversial contract to hire outside experts to help police crack down on crime. ktvu's alex savidge is live for us in oakland and tells us the vote came after hundreds of speakers and a heated debate. >> reporter: well, hundreds of people spoke out on this controversial topic. there were four hours of public

comment. the final vote didn't company until the morning. the council approved a consulting contract with bill bratton, a man whose past policing policies have come under fire. that vote angered many people in the audience. many in the crowd reacted strongly as the vote came down just after 2:00 this morning. ktvu had the only camera inside council chambers at the time. police moved in for a short time to maintain order. there were roughly 275 people who spoke at this lengthy council meeting. the council approved a contract with bratton's consulting firm on a 7-1 vote. bratton will help come in and help with a crime-fighting plan. critics are concerned about an apressive stop-and-frisk pomcy that -- aggressive stop-and- frisk policy that some worry

could lead to racial profiling. this woman voted against this. >> a vote against this is not about being serious about crime. it's about we need to do the real work. the real work to address crime in this community. >> reporter: opponents believe the $250,000 for this consulting contract would be better spent on social services. but howard jordan told the council his department needs to do strategy. he believes bratton is one of the best out there. he ran the nypd and the l.a.p.d. and has been widely raised for improving community relations with police. >> we're in a position right now where we have to make changes, moving forward in order to make oakland safer. i think this gives us a road map to doing that. >> reporter: and to address community concerns, the city council included an ameantment emphasizing that -- amendment

emphasizing that racial profiling will not be tolerated as part of this plan. the council took other crime- fighting measures, including hiring 11 alameda county sheriff deputies to help patrol in oakland and the gave -- and the council gave the go ahead to bring more oakland officers in on a long-term basis. those opposed to bratton's hiring, there were a number of members of the public who support the plan. hear from them coming up at 8:00. live in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. it started overnight as an attempted traffic stop for erratic driving in fremont but it quickly turned into a chase that went to and through san francisco. officer camera caught this moving north. we were right behind the chp through oakland and across the bay bridge where officers popped the suspect's tires with spike strips. the chase continued for several blocks in the city before it

ended with the drivers arrested at 14th street and south va necessary. hillary clinton is making her first appearance at the hearing. you can see clinton there. she says this morning that the state department is moving aggressively to strengthen security after the deadly september 1th raid on the benghazi conflict -- september 11th raid on the benghazi conflict. coming up at 7:15 where she got

choked up up choked-- choked up. palo alto police are expected to release more details about an armed robbery near downtown palo alto. it happened around 8:45 last night. police say a man with a gun approached a couple of that was walking down the street. the rob took -- the robber took the man's purse and the man's wallet. nobody was hurt. home burglaries in palo alto went up. 226 burglaries were reported in 2012 compared to 129 in 2011. no homicides were reported last year. 23 aggravated assaults were report and that's down from 35 in 2001. palo alto's police chief says he's added six staff members to investigate the spike in these burglaries. it's a report that could signal the company's future. apple is expected to report their sales from the 2012 holiday season. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us why there is a great deal of concern over today's earnings report. >> reporter: the big question are sales of iphones slipping. now, analysts will be looking to see if the tech giant has momentum going into 2013. verizon just came out with new

numbers on their phones. while they sold a record number of phones, only half of those were for the iphone 5. customers were attracted to buying 4s and ss because they are marked down a couple of hundred dollars. there's speculation that afterle has cut its -- there's speculation that apple has cut and so they will be looking at the shipping numbers for the quarter. the pressure is on ceo tim cook ever since he took over the company a year and a half ago to see if he will come up with new products in 2013. >> there's hints of television and other things they can do. i'm interested and probably put a lot of my dollars back into apple, as i have, buttia -- i'm not -- i'm not looking at one quarter's worth of sales to jeopardize the incredible amount of power they've had before. >> reporter: analysts are

divided whether today's earnings report will show an increase or a decrease. published reports show if they drop a profit, it would be the first time in nine years. so the conference call with tim cook will be crucial for the company. the earnings report is expected to be out after the market closes. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," we also plan on talking to more consumers to sort of gauge what their feelings are and if they are strong with apple or if they are more attracted to the competitors. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:07. let's head right out to sal castanedo. roads are getting busier. you are checkth out the east. bay for us -- clerking out the east bay for us. >> yes. traffic is getting read highway 24 westbound as you drive. we have a live picture of this for you. you can see the traffic -- especially in the orinda area starts to get slow to the two tunnels that are open now. but no problems on the other side of the world -- the other

second term agenda. the sierra club is calling for a major protest in washington, d.c. next month against the controversial keystone pipeline. the club is planning a rally around february 17th. the president of the club also says the club will for the first time in its 120-year history engage in an act of civil disobedience to protest the pipeline. they are not providing details of exactly what they are planning to do, they would transport oil. a 22-year-old man is behind bars this morning charged in a campus shooting at a community college near houston. sheriff deputies in harris county, texas say a fight between the suspect and another man ended in gunfire at lone star college yesterday. both men were wounded. a cap vas maintenance man was caught in the crossfire as well. but no one was killed. but the gunshot led to a lockdown and shelter in place for several tense hours. l.a.p.d. police had a seven-hour

standoff with a murder suspect. he jumped on the roof of a building. it started before 8:00 last night. s.w.a.t. teams tried to coax him off the roof. around 2:00 a.m., the police shot him with beanbags and were able to arrest him. the suspect was not armed during the ordeal. a man robbed a man in mill valley may have -- robbed a bank in million valley may have robbed another bank this month. this is the sixth bank robbery in marin since december 12th. investigators say the same man may have robbed a union bank in green bay on january 9th. the suspect in both cases is white, 6 feet tall, blue or green eyes and scruffy facial hair. a new emergency alert system will give quicker alerts to schools. an update from the rrent system that sends alerts to

stand lines as well. alert marin will be launched this saturday. people can register their cell phones through alertmarin.org. walmart will try to expand its rohnert park store into a superstore one more time. they first tried this with the store on redwood. walmart will resubmit the plans to the committee tomorrow. it'spening night for san francisco's new jazz center. this evening's concert will celebrate the newing about in the city's haze valley neighborhood dedicated totally to jazz. bill cosby will host tonight and soldout show at the center. she gave birth to colin kaepernick. now the quarterback's biological mother discusses the toughest decision of her life days before the biggest game of his life. cam has become the golden boy leading the team to their first super bowl in nearly two

menlo park city council has approved a deal for facebook's new campus. the facebook west campus at bay front exprose way and willow road will have a living roof that will have it blend into the landscape. menlo park will get $1.1 million as part of the deal. 600 use yers were studied -- users were studied and people are limited to they feel and want to quit entirely due to photos and pictures.

we also watch 880 southbound between hayward and union city. that crash is still on the shoulder. if you are driving on the peninsula, that commute continues to look good. eight-minute drive from 380 san bruno to 92. it's not changed. let's keep it that way. let's go to steve. good morning, in for steve this morning we have gray skies out the door and we'll watch the showers fall over the area. we're seeing mostly cloudy conditions. a few returns picked up over the sonoma county airport. so santa rosa perhaps picking up a little bit of light rain this morning but most of us remain dry with our best chance coming later today, giving you a look you can see the plume off the coastline. if i squeeze in closer, a little bit of drizzle falling over the peninsula, this mid- level moisture and not hitting the ground yet.

it was supposed to be a fiery art display but things went terribly wrong when fire burned more than the display. tara moriarty is live with more details on just how much damage was done. >> reporter: yeah, setting fire to artwork. this is part of an interactive

display. you can see behind me here it could land the owner in trouble. this is a map of the united states and now it's all burned. the artwork was made out of matches. 25,000 of them and by lighting it, it caused this damage. last night around midnight, fire crews were called out here when smoke and flames could be seen inside the building. right now we'll see you -- show you some youtube video. clair fontaine is a paris-based artist who creates maps and sometimes militant messages out of matches. the problem, it posed a safety hazard. it happened next to a nail salon in the mission district. the gallery's website says it is dedicated to presenting audio, visual and performance- based projects. this would call into the category. fire official says it caused $5,000 worth of damage to the building and walls. arson investigators were called

in. while the gallery didn't mean any arm, he could face charges of reckless arson. this case will be presented to the district attorney's office either sometime today or tomorrow. tam, ktvu channel 2 news -- tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco firefighters acted quickly to put out flames burning two buildings. arson investigators believe it was started by something inside a blue bin. but they are investigating. one person got out of the building safe. the otherring about was unoccupied. this morning, in lake county, fire crews hope to fully contain a wildfire that gee gan as a controlled burn. the fire burned out of control

off highway 29 near kelseyville. the fire has burned 300 acres and is about 50% contained. calfire is blaming the dry conditions and thick brush for fueling the fire. no homes are threatened. the nraa is criticizing president obama's reference to absolutism in his inauguration speech. nra's executive president spoke to supporters in reno, nevada last night and took issue for president obama for saying in his speech that americans shouldn't mistake absolutism for principallism. >> ] is saying the only principal way to make -- >> the nra inalready pert -- interpreted the remarks as a represents to the strong

opposition to any -- as a reaction to the strong opposition. right now, a person living in san francisco can travel to the peninsula or elsewhere in the state to buy a weapon. that purchase will be recorded in that city. but there will be no official record of the gun coming into san francisco. there are other loopholes as well. today, north bay congressman mike thompson will head up a hearing on gun violence prevention. he's a hunter and gun owner and believes the second amendment should be protected. but he says there's room for changes in gun policies to reduce gun violence. he says that requires background checks for all purchases. he supports strictly penalties for people who buy them illegally for them who can't get them as well as -- as well as all gun trafficking. coming up at 7:45, we'll tell you both sides of the

debate. there's now word the rape allegations against michael crabtree are not holding up. today's chronicle reports his accuser was one of three women who joined crabtree for a party at the w hotel on third street. she claims crabtree assaulted her after the party held after the 9ers beat the packers but the sources say the other two women told investigators that crabtree did not assault anyone. police have not found any physical evidence of an attack. the sacramento kings may have some new bidders. the bee reports that ron berkele are in serious talks to buy the team and help finance the new downtown arena. the founder of 24-fitness wants tried to buy the team. a man is accused of a disturbance inside a vallejo hospital emergency room. police say 28-year-old tabby small stormed into the sutter

solano medical center monday morning demanding to see his wife being held for mental health exams. officers say the group leaped over the counter and started to attack medical personnel. he was arrested on charges of battery on medical staff. the vallejo police department promises it won't be caught short handed. the herald reports that six ours will retire. the -- officers will retire. the department could drainle to the lowest -- dwindle to the lowest in years. the voice actor who portrayed charlie brown was arrested on stalking charges in southern california. 56-year-old peter robbins is said to be arraigned today. he was the voice of charlie.

san jose police are looking for the men behind the brazen robbery of an elderly couple. police say two or three men with knives tied up the victims in their home on monday. they stole jewelry, electronics and two cars from that frightened couple. >> they are shaken up, understandably, and you are concerned about them. you never know who that could have happened to. >> neighbors say the violent crime happened hours before the home invasion. police cannot say for sure if the same men are responsible. it seems the affordable housing debate in los gatos has only just begin. last night an overflowing crowd attended a town council meeting there. most of them were upset over proposal for five buildings that could have brought 629

high-density affordable buildings to the town. >> i'm concerned that by putting hundreds more people in the neighborhood it's going to put hundreds of more cars on the road. >> the town council decided to rethink its plan. the general plan committee will try to come up with alternative location and town staff will try to figure out how affordable housing residents would impact traffic in schools. the light project is still a couple of months away. tonight through friday night, they will be testifying , test, the l.e.d. lights used in theel is coupe ur. they will illuminate the western -- used in the sculpture. they will ill loom night the western bay bridge. i'm sure they will be fantastic. >> yes. sam, it looks like traffic is getting -- sal, it looks like traffic is getting better but you have a crash.

thickened, lower just a little bit. we're picking um a little bit of rain over parts of a sonoma area. mor the most we remain dry. you can see plenty of -- for the most part, we replain dry. you can see plenty off here to the north bay. but again, the low low levels are very dry. we've been very dry for several days. it will take a while before this moistens up. hillsburg, santa rosa, picking up a spritz. mostly gray skies. mostly dry for most of us. at least until we get into the afternoon. let me show you what you can expect. you may need the umbrella. we'll remain without the sunshine today. right about 11:00 or so, you can see widespread light rain perhaps beginning to fall and it's widespread from north to south. we're not seeing -- we're not seeing it just over the north or south. the lunchtime could be soggy in

some areas. and then into the afternoon, we'll continue with this possibility of just some light rain. the evening drive could have slick roads. so that could man for as well. how much rain will we get out of this system? less than .50. perhaps just a few .100 to 2/10. about .25 or less. the hills picking up a little bit more. temperatures, outside our doe with the clouds -- door, with the clouds overhead. a lot warmer than where we have been recently. around the bay, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmer. inland, 15 degrees warmer. you will notice thattals you get outside this morning. just not as cold. but into the afternoon, we're going to be cooler without the sunshine and with the rain. make sure you at least bring along a light jacket in case you need it. we get past the showers today. we're drying out thursday, friday. temperatures don't warm. we remain in the mid- to upper 50s as we get into the weekend and we have an opportunity for tom rain that moves in on -- for some rain that moves in.

refund. repair work is underway on the eastern tower of the bay bridge. that tower was damaged earlier this month when an empty oil tanker grazed it while heading out to sea in dense fog. you can see from the pictures, the lowsup pictures of that repair work as it is getting underway now. this is actually from yesterday morning. a huge crane barge will act as the on-site repair headquarters for that big-money project. >> the initial allegation was $3 million. we hope to come in underneath that. >> the repair job is scheduled to take 90 days but the projects could be pleated -- could be completed earlier depending upon the weather. it was a vocal community meeting in san francisco as the public voiced opinions about the police chief's push for tasers. members of the police commission listened to concerns at the hamilton recreation center. the chief is pushing for a pilot program to arm 100 officers with tasers. although considered a less leaser -- lethal alternative,

a san jose retirement community is moving forward with a controversial plan to reduce the growing deer population. deer no longer fear humans they say, and are acting aggressively towards pet. they are also chewing up the landscaping. starting this weekend, a wildlife company will start to sterilize the female deer. the plan calls for relocating some 30 deer but critics say it's all just a temporary fix. >> once 30 deer have been

2." i'm claudine wong. >> i'm brian flores. it's wednesday, january 23rd. tori campbell and dave clark have today off. overnight, the oakland city council proved a controversial contract to hire outside experts to help police crack down on crime. alex savidge is in oakland with how city leaders are trying to ease fears about racial profiling. alex? >> reporter: well, as part of this plan to bring on former police chief brill bat -- bill bratton, the city council during their vote included an amendment, essentially emphasizing that racial profiling will not be tolerated in any form or fashion as part of whatever strategies are put into place. early this morning, this meeting stretches the early -- the early-morning hours, i should say, four hours of public comment took place during the meeting. many people were frustrated by the final vote. [inaudible] >> shame on you! >> reporter: an angry reaction from the audience as the vote

came down just after 2:00 this morning. ktvu with the only camera in the council chambers at the time. the council approved a contract with bratton's consulting firm on a 7-1 vote. bratton will now come in and help help develop a crime- fighting plan in oakland. there are critics concerned about his past support for an aggressive stop and frisk policy allowing officers to search people they feel are suspicious. some worry that could lead to racial profiling. roughly 275 people spoke out at this lengthy council meeting. many believe hiring bratton is a waste of money. >> this is not gonna stop crime. your fears are only gonna get worse! >> reporter: opponents believe the $250,000 for this consulting contract would be better spent on social services. but oakland police chief howard jordan told the council his department needs to try a new strategy. bratton who ran both the nypd

and the l.a.p.d. has been widely praised for reducing crime and improving community relations with police. some who live in oakland support out in support of his hiring. >> bringing in a change might not be the solution in the long run, but in the short-term, i think it's what you guys need to do, you need to vote your conviction. you need to keep the faith. >> reporter: during this council meeting, chief jordan promised any new policing plans put in place developed by this outside agency will include community imput. i did reach out to bratton's consulting firm for reaction to the counsel vote. i've not heard back yet. coming up at 8:45, i will tell you about the other crime- fighting measures approved by the city council overnight. live in merning in oakland -- morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. five people are in custody accused in a shooting that wounded an undercover oakland police officer. the shooting sparked a 20-hour search near seminary and 17th.

police arrested two parolees and detained two others for questioning. the officer is out of the hospital. sheriff deputies are investigating a wine heist at a south bay restaurant. they say several pricey bottles were taken from the restaurant on monday. the restaurant on big basin way has a very large selection of wine in a cellar. it's rumored to be worth about a million dollars. >> i'm astounded. in saratoga, it's -- it's such a quiet village and everybody enjoys the village and nobody -- nobody has these feelings about being threatened or safety or anything like that. >> some wine bottles are priced at several thousand dollars. packard hospital is notifying patients after a laptop was stolen from a doctor's car. the theft happened on january

9th away from campus. the computer did not contain financial or credit card information orrises numbers but -- or social security numbers. but it did have nails, dates of birth and basic medical information. patients are being offered free identity protection services. the sonoma center is the state's largest for the developmentally disabled and state regulators are accusing the center of failing to proprotect patients -- patients from serious injury and death. later today, apple is expected to report its iphone and iphone sales from the 2012 holiday season. janine de la vega is here to tell us why there is a great deal of concern over today's earnings report. janine? >> reporter: claudine, there's no doubt that apple and its products are popular. here inside the store, customers are already getting personal training sessions on how to use their apple products. there have been rumors about

winning demand over the iphone 5. so investors are really looking to tim cook to address their concerns. apple's earnings report is expected to be released after the market closes. cook will be holding a conference call to discuss last quarterrary results. there's been speculation that products for the iphone have been severely cut so analysts want to know if demand has weakened other if it's a supply issue. the pressure has been on cook ever since he took over the company a year and a half ago to see if he could keep the company going. one consumer said this -- >> there is a point you reach at, i can't have the mini ipad and ipad but i think apple kind of will always be ahead of the curve and be popular among a lot of people, especially in california. >> reporter: verizon reported that while this sold a record number of phones, only half were iphone 5s. many customers were more attracted to buying the 4s and

4-ss because they are marked down significantly. there are many who still prefer android because of the flexibility and choice they offer. >> i switched to the samsung galaxy. it's a great, great phone. i think it outsold the iphone last quarter. it's a great phone. a lot of my friends are picking it up, too. i have no brie gets. >> reporter: apple's stock has taken a significant hit in recent months. some are calling this report for apple the most significant in a decade. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. meanwhile, new court records show steve jobs threatened to file a patent lawsuit if a rifle company said he -- if a rival company said it would consider approaching apple employees. the workers claim the other tech if firms confired to eliminate competition for top workers as a way to hold down salaries. the judge is considering

welcome back. only on 2, an interactive fiery art display gets out of control. tara moriarty joins us from the scene in the mission with more details. >> reporter: it sounds like the art gallery owner would do, set fire to artwork but actually the artist intended it that way. if you look behind me, you can see there are 25,000 matches all put together to look like the united states. now, it's all burned and the -- the grail owner could be in hot water. last night around midnight, fire crews were called out here when flames could be seen inside the building and smoke was shooting out. this is a look at some youtube video of artwork by the same artist. he cre tates maps and messages

out of matches -- creates matches and messages -- matches and messages out of matches. they are dedicated to presenting projects. fire officials say it cost $5,000 worst of damage to the ceiling and walls. they had to cut through the ceiling to ventilate it. arson investigators were called in. while the gallery owner didn't think he was doing anything illegal and no one was hurt, he could face charges of arson. this case will be presented to the san francisco district attorney general and office sometime today or tomorrow. tara moriarty -- attorney general's office sometime today or tomorrow. san francisco fire acted quickly to put out flames burning quickly on oak street. arson investigators believe it was started by something inside a blue bin in between the two buildings but they are still investigating. there's one person inside one of the buildings but that person got out safely.

the other building is an office. two people were taken to the hospital after their car crashed into a tree. that happened at around 1:45 on hicks road at camden avenue in san jose. authorities describe the driver as a young male adult. a female passenger was also in the car. no word on what caused the driver to lose control. a new emergency alert system will give people in marin county quicker access to updates from lowell schools. people who live in marin county are able to receive emergency alerts by text, voice or e- mail. an autopsy yet date from the current service that sends alerts. an alert will be registered this saturday and people can register through their cell phones. a 24-year-old man is behind bars this morning. sheriff deputies in harris county, texas say a fight between the suspect and another man ended in gunfire in texas at lone star college yesterday. both men were wounded. a campus maintenance man was caught in the crossfire. no one was killed but the

gunshots led to a campus lockdown and a saler -- celter in place -- shelter-in-place order for many hours. a man in los angeles took refuge on the roof of a building that police surrounded. after a seven-hour standoff, police shot the man with bean bags and arrested him. this started at 8:00 and ended just after 2:00 this morning. a man who robbed a bank in mill valley may have robbed a bank early in green bay earlier this month. the marin independent journal reports that union bank was tarted last night around -- targeted last night around 5:45. that's the sixth robbery in marin. investigators say the same man may have robbed a union bank in green bay on january 9th. the police describe the suspect as white, 40s or 50s, around 6 feet tall, blue or green eyes an scrufffy hair, in both

cases. police say a man with a gun approached a couple of walking down the street last night. the robber took the woman's purse and the man's wallet. no one was hurt. new crime statistics show that home burglary eswent u according to palo alto online, there were 226 burglaries in 2012. that's compared to 149 in 2011. there were no homicides last year. but police investigate 223ed aggravated assaults -- police investigated 23 aggravated assaults. the house of representatives will vote today on republican plans to temporarily increase the country's debt limit. the measure would fund the government through may 19th. republicans decided they want to get blamed for the default. the legislation claims a provision that withholds the pay for house and senate members if they fail to pass a plan. authorities in fork say they've proud criminal charges against three -- brought

criminal charges against three people that infected computers widespread. that's computerses were involved. that virus caused millions of dollars in damage. there's now word the rain allegations against -- the rape allegations against michael crabtree are not holing up. the accuser was one of three who joined crabtree at a party at san francisco's w hotel on third street. and she claims crabtree assaulted her after the party held hours after the niners beat the green bay packers. but sources say the other two women have sold officers -- told investigators that crabtree did not assault anyone and police have not found any physical evidence of the attack. the kings may have some new bidders. the bee reports that mass trop and berkele are in serious talks to buy the new arena. mass trop is the bay area investor and founder of 24-hour witness who tried to buy the

warriors. berkele owns the penguins and helped that team get a new arena and win a championship. a man is accused of a disturbance inside a vallejo hospital emergency room. police say 28-year-old tavi small stormed into the suttert solano medical center monday morning demanding to see his wife being held for a mental health exam. officers say he grew agitated leaped over a counter. police did eventually arrest him on charges including suspicion of battery and battery on medical staff. the vallejo police department promises it not be -- it will not be caught shorthanded. the herald report says six officers will retire. the department could dwindle to 84 hours. but a sales tax increase will fund the hiring up to 93 total officers. an academy cadet join the department as soon as monday. the voice actor who portrayed charlie brown was arrested on stalking charges. he's set to be arraigned today on counts of making a threat to

[inaudible] >> shale on you! shame on you! >> reporter: you can hear the angry reaction from the audience as the vote came down just after 2:00 this morning, ktvu with the only camera in the council chambers at the time. the council approved a contract with bratton's consulting firm with the 7-1 vote. bratton will come in to help develop a crime-fighting plan in oakland. he has many critics. they are concerned about his past support for an aggressive frisk policy. some worry this could lead to racial profiling. although the city council included an amendment overnight emphasizing racial profiling will not be tolerated as part as any new strategies put in place. roughly 275 people spoke at this lengthy council meeting and many were emotional. >> please, don't do it for something that doesn't even work work! >> reporter: opponents believe the $250,000 for this contract would be better spent on social

services in oakland. bratton ran both the nypd and the l.a.p.d. and haz been widely praised for reducing crime in those both of those cities. howard jordan toldle council during this meeting that his -- told the count during this meeting that his department has to do something. >> i'm gonna support him. he's in the law enforcement business. i'm not. council members are not. so i'm gonna rely on him. >> reporter: during the council meeting chief jordan promised any new breaking news developed by bratton will include community -- community input. i did reach out to bratton's consulting firm for a reaction to the council vote here in oakland. i still have not heard back this morning. but following the bratton vote, the city council green lighted the hiring of 11 alameda county sheriff deputies and they also approved funding for a new police academy here in oakland

control -- gun control proposals. right now, a person living in san francisco can travel to the peninsula or elsewhere in the state to buy a weapon. that purchase will be recorded in that city but there will be no official record of the gun coming into san francisco. there are several other loopholes as well. mike thompson will head up a hearing. he believes a second amendment should be protected. but he says there's room for changes in gun policies to rece gun violence. he says those required background checks and he supports strictly penalties for those who buy guns for those who cannot get them otherwise. the nra executive vice president spoke to a group of supporters in reno, nevada last night and took issue with president obama for saying
